Genre Reseach

Genre research - grime

Who are the leading artists in the genre?
There are many leading artists in the grime genre but the main ones are Wiley, Skepta, Ghetts, Lethal Bizzle, Dizzee Rascal and JME. There are also grime crews such as So Solid Crew, Boy Better Know and Roll Deep.

What is the history of the genre?
Grime originates from Bow, East London where it would be played on private radio stations such as Rinse FM and MajorFM.com. Grime was known by many names but the three mains ones were: 8-bar (8 bar verse patterns), nu shape (more developed 16 and 32 bar verse patterns) and sublow (this refers to the low bassline frequencies).  Dizzee Rascal and Wiley are among the first to bring grime to the mainstream media attention in 2003/2004. Grime was mainly shown on Channel AKA. In the early stages of grime, Wiley and Dizzee would use drum and bass, the lyricism and vocal styles of hip hop and would change some of the rhythms of dancehall to capture all 3 genres and add a down-tempo dimension to the mix. Grime was very popular in the UK but unfortunately didn't have much attention from countries around the world. Grime as a whole is filled with a lot of youngsters trying to get big in the music industry and many others that have already reached that goal.

What other genres does it connect with?
Grime uses dubstep, dancehall. hip hop, drum and bass and UK garage. Grime evolved from the UK garage genre.

How do artists from the genre represent themselves?

People in this genre are represented in a stereotypical way. People think that all they wear are hoodies and chains and gucci belts and act in a "hood" like manner (gangster like).  people expect their behaviour to be rude, arrogant & ignorant but actually it is far from that (it also depends on the artist). They represent themselves as strong dominate men.

Who is the audience and what do they expect/want?
The audience that Grime mainly targets teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15-20 years of age. I think the main reason for this is because teenagers can relate to the stuff that the grime artists rap about.
